It was Saturday morning, August 24, 1974, during a summer that marked Cyprus from the coup d'état engineered in Greece and the Turkish invasion that followed. The routine at the house of Charalambos Zenou and Paraskevoula Charalambous from Trouloi village in the Larnaca district, continued as best as possible. The two were the only ones from the family that stayed behind and did not find refuge in nearby Larnaca. The flock that Charalambos was taking care of was the reason why his wife returned to the village after a brief stay in Larnaca during the first phase of the invasion. Despite her family’s pleas, Paraskevoula was adamant in returning home. In any case, one marries for better or for worse. And during this time, she had to be near her spouse.
