KIOS Distinguished Lecture in Memory of Prof. Elias Kyriakides

The University of Cyprus and the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence are organizing a distinguished lecture in memory of Prof. Elias Kyriakides (1975-2019), who was a member of the faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Cyprus and a founding member of the KIOS Center of Excellence.

The lecture entitled “The future electricity systems towards climate neutrality” will take place on Tuesday, 12 November 2024, at 12:00, in Amphitheater LRC012 at the University of Cyprus Library. The lecture will be delivered by Dr. Andreas Poullikkas, ex-Chairman of the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority.

In this lecture, Dr. Poullikkas will present and discuss the EU's energy strategy, the future of power systems in the energy transition, the need for integrating energy storage systems in the power systems and increasing electricity interconnections for further penetration of renewables. Furthermore, Dr. Poullikkas will elaborate on the complexity of the electricity markets and the necessity to redesign power systems to achieve climate neutrality.

Dr. Andreas Poullikkas holds a Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.) degree in mechanical engineering, a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree in nuclear safety and turbomachinery, a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in numerical analysis and a Doctor of Technology (D.Tech.) higher doctorate degree in energy policy and energy systems optimization from Loughborough University, U.K. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (FIET). Dr. Andreas Poullikkas is the ex- Chairman of the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) and he was for several years the Chairman of the Cyprus Energy Strategy Council. In his professional career he has worked for academic institutions and for the industry. He is the Associate Editor of the journal Discover Energy (Springer Nature), member of various journals’ Editorial Boards and the author of various peer-reviewed publications in scientific journals, book chapters, conference proceedings and the author of ten books.

For attending the workshop registration is required by November 8, 2024, at the following link: https://forms.office.com/e/jkzEkvQU1L

The lecture is open to the public. More information about the lecture can be found at the link:

Professor Elias Kyriakides was a leading expert in the areas of electric power systems and critical infrastructure systems with an emphasis on wide area monitoring and control, power system operations, and the integration of renewable energy sources. He received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University, USA in 2003 with a specialization in electric power systems. He has worked as a Research Associate at Arizona State University from Aug. 2000 - Dec. 2003 and as a Faculty Research Associate from Jan - July 2004. He was a member of the faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department of the University of Cyprus since 2004 and a co-founder of the KIOS Research and Innovation Center of Excellence.

His research expertise included the applications of synchronized measurements in power systems, power system optimization and security enhancement, economic dispatch, and the integration of renewable energy sources.

He has published more than 200 papers in high-caliber refereed journals and international conferences and served as a Coordinator for several national and European projects and as a partner in several others. He was the Action Chair of the ESF-COST Action “Intelligent Monitoring, Security, and Control of Critical Infrastructure Systems” (IntelliCIS) that was successfully completed in May 2013. He served as the Associate Editor for the IEEE Systems Journal and the Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Sustainable Energy. He was also the Chair of the IEEE Cyprus Section.
