The Department of Fine Arts of the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT) is delighted to invite you to the annual exhibition of its graduate students, entitled CUTS 2024, the opening of which will take place on May 25th 2024 at 6:00 pm at the Limassol Municipal Arts Centre – Apothikes Papadaki, in collaboration with the Limassol Municipality Cultural Affairs. The synergy between the Department of Fine Arts and the Limassol Municipal Arts Centre – Apothikes Papadaki reinforces the cultural synergies across the city, and extends the cultural openness to the citizens for an active interaction with the vital space of art.

The Department of Fine Arts of CUT, consolidating its position as an active academic community with an outstanding development and contribution to the contemporary visual arts’ practice and theory, presents selected works of the final year thesis work of its graduate students. The exhibition puts forward the creative amalgam of the academic fields and expanded media of the Department of Fine Arts - painting, sculpture, installation, printmaking, video, new media, sound, etc. -, which intersect with different cultural, humanistic and scientific fields as well as new technologies. The final thesis works move within the context of emerging cultural practices and critical disputes to engage with the complex contents of our contemporary worlds. Issues of localism and globalism, questions around ecology, explorations into themes of emerging identities as an outgrowth of today's physical, digital and sensorial, labyrinthine worlds, as well as reflections on structures and patterns of power and ideologies, cross with practices of healing, as well as practices of contemporary rituals from youth culture. The works highlight the morphoplastic, transformative possibilities of art, conceived as a space of visibility, inclusion and care.

The works, an outcome of visual discourse and research by this new generation of artists, are proposed in the exhibition space as a speculative art exhibition/study into contemporary practices and theories of seeing. Perhaps, to also, encounter the contemplation and promise made visible in the lyrics of the Cypriot poet Eleni Toumazi/Rebelina (1947-2023):

Vision as wakefulness

Vision as presence

I hear an extra-human language

I break the boundaries of my perception

and commune with the unknown other.
